Set on a windswept hillside on Victoria’s Phillip Island overlooking the Bass Strait, Ventnor Beach House by 

 is a retreat that allows the untamed coastline to be experienced in all its many states. The form and materiality of the modular house are driven by the challenges of this extreme landscape, with the home acting as a barrier to protect an external courtyard.

The home is divided into two distinct volumes – a garage and entry protecting an enclosed courtyard with swimming pool, and the main four-bedroom home that follows the contours of the land. 

The entry volume is clad in Pacific teak timber while the main home is wrapped in contrasting zinc cladding, both of which will develop a rich patina over time in response to the coastal setting.

Arranged around a central kitchen, the internal and external living spaces have been organised to provide ample shelter at different times of the day and throughout the year – with the views taking centre stage at all times.

The use of natural materials reflects the spectacular surroundings. Tongue & Groove solid engineered European oak floorboards in the Graupa colour and Classic Grade textured finish complements this neutral palette. 

The warm honey and cream hues of the timber honour the character of the oak and are essential in creating a relaxing holiday retreat.

Before its current incarnation as one of the most impressive homes in Norwood, Adelaide, this sandstone villa was a tired dwelling in need of a full overhaul – and one that its current owners had spent more than five years dreaming of owning. The home was eventually put on the market and bought by a friend of the couple, who then sold it to them six months later. Split symmetrically across two titles, it was a golden opportunity to subdivide the property. With the design vision of 

, however, the clients transformed it into a spectacular family home.

Transforming an ageing interior is a complex task, and it takes a strong creative vision to bring dated homes into the present. When architect John Deuchrass, Principal Architect at JDA Studio, was faced with a top floor apartment in a 1950’s, yellow-brick block of units in the harbourside suburb of Manly in Sydney, he decided to strip the interior back to a shell and create a crisp, calm, sophisticated space with a sense of warmth to evoke the nearby beach.

Clover House is home to a family of six, including four young adult children. “We rejuvenated and revitalised the house and brought better amenities to the home for a more adult population,” says Carole Whiting, founder of Studio Whiting.

A small 1882 worker’s cottage in Sydney’s inner-west suburb of Leichhardt has been transformed into a stunning family home that maximises the site by

The typical L-shaped layout of the home has been substantially reimagined, taking advantage of the sloped site to create a cascading arrangement of volumes that steps down from the street level to the rear living area and garden. Skylights flood the interior with natural light, bringing the interior to life.

, was approached to design a family home in Brisbane with a sleek, dark interior, the challenge was to avoid an interior that felt oppressive. “The client is particularly fond of concrete paired with black tones,” says Maddison. “We had to find ways to incorporate nature and warmth – and the choice of finishes significantly contributes to softening the concrete structure.”

The QT Museum Hotel in Wellington, New Zealand, by 

 reimagines the much-loved Museum Art Hotel, retaining its eccentric spirit alongside an extraordinary collection of New Zealand artwork and Italian motorbikes.
