Pavilion House by Jorge Hrdina Architects is a contemporary family home in the exclusive suburb of Mosman, Sydney. Situated on a double block alongside a 19th-century Queen Anne heritage home, it cleverly draws inspiration from its neighbour to create a strong connection to its surroundings driven by craftsmanship, form, and materiality.

Intricately hand-crafted details and a similar material palette form the basis of this connection – most notably in the way the new building is grounded in rough-hewn sandstone, echoing the base of the federation home.

Like the exterior, the interior of the home is defined by enduring, natural, and honest materials – think sculpted concrete beams, stained Blackbutt timber, honed sandstone floors, and Tongue & Groove solid engineered European oak floorboards in the Hekke colour and Classic Grade textured finish.

The same timber has been used to craft the oak treads of the winding staircase. This sculptural stair leads to a small, self-contained apartment and media room above and an underground wine cellar below.

The subtly oversized width of the Grande format floorboards emphasises the spacious interiors, while the smokey grey colour and warm brown undertones of Hekke achieve a unique weathered effect that responds to the considered balance between old and new.
