Set in the exclusive Melbourne suburb of Brighton, The International is a development by 

 that redefines luxury residential living. The architecture celebrates and responds to the spectacular setting with expansive glazing that frames the iconic views over the bay, dissolving the boundaries between interior and exterior.

Each apartment is defined by a crafted yet refined material palette, which is elevated by Tongue & Groove solid engineered European oak floorboards in Freado. This neutral colour offers a timeless backdrop that complements the natural stone, bespoke oak joinery, and concrete, giving residents the opportunity to make the deliberately minimalistic interiors their own.

The Tongue & Groove timber boards are set out in a Chevron Parquetry pattern and feature a luxurious Classic Grade textured finish. This pairing epitomises the ‘classic meets contemporary’ aesthetic of The International, and evokes the grandeur of the area’s early 20th-century homes.

The sophisticated, richly layered interior is enhanced through the power of light, which creates a dynamic play of soft shadows and brings the refined, natural palette to life. As the sun moves throughout the day, natural light transforms the space. At night, discreet wall lighting illuminates the interior with a diffuse light that complements the muted palette.

With this considered approach to materiality and connection to the surroundings – alongside generous floor plans and an open flow of space – The International reimagines luxury apartment living in a style that evokes high-end hotel and hospitality fit-outs.

Transforming an ageing interior is a complex task, and it takes a strong creative vision to bring dated homes into the present. When architect John Deuchrass, Principal Architect at JDA Studio, was faced with a top floor apartment in a 1950’s, yellow-brick block of units in the harbourside suburb of Manly in Sydney, he decided to strip the interior back to a shell and create a crisp, calm, sophisticated space with a sense of warmth to evoke the nearby beach.

Clover House is home to a family of six, including four young adult children. “We rejuvenated and revitalised the house and brought better amenities to the home for a more adult population,” says Carole Whiting, founder of Studio Whiting.

A small 1882 worker’s cottage in Sydney’s inner-west suburb of Leichhardt has been transformed into a stunning family home that maximises the site by

The typical L-shaped layout of the home has been substantially reimagined, taking advantage of the sloped site to create a cascading arrangement of volumes that steps down from the street level to the rear living area and garden. Skylights flood the interior with natural light, bringing the interior to life.

, was approached to design a family home in Brisbane with a sleek, dark interior, the challenge was to avoid an interior that felt oppressive. “The client is particularly fond of concrete paired with black tones,” says Maddison. “We had to find ways to incorporate nature and warmth – and the choice of finishes significantly contributes to softening the concrete structure.”
