“New York meets Paris” is an ambitious brief for a penthouse in Kangaroo Point, a vibrant cliffside suburb of Brisbane overlooking the city’s river – and Harry Poulos Architects achieved this vision by focusing on traditional detailing with a contemporary twist.
“Through this concept, we created a framework of practical opulence, elegance, and juxtaposition of textures,” reveals architect Stephanie Maniera.
The luxurious interior is punctuated by an impressive curved stair that adds sculptural definition to the open-plan.
The entire lower floor is dedicated to expansive living spaces, that are connected by Tongue & Groove solid engineered oak boards in Kimber – a colour that Maniera says has “the perfect balance of warm and cooler tones and provides a juxtaposition against the bespoke, French-inspired wall panelling”.
The same Tongue & Groove boards have been used for the curvaceous stair. “The continuation of the floor finish up the stairs as well as the integrated handrail emphasises the curve and provides continuity between the upper and lower floors,” explains Maniera.
The timber floor and stair is complemented by soft curtaining, bespoke cabinetry, natural stone, and sophisticated nickel fixtures and fittings; while strategically concealed LED lighting artfully illuminates the fine craftsmanship.
“Selecting the Tongue & Groove flooring was driven by the quality of product and the calibre of the project,” says Maniera.
“The natural oak of the Tongue & Groove boards truly grounds the design, feels incredible underfoot, and provides the visual warmth that unifies the entire space.
