Wategos Beach in Byron Bay is a tranquil spot, much-loved for its pristine natural beauty, and it was this breathtaking landscape that inspired the architecture and interior palette of Brahimy House by Harley Graham Architects – think concrete, spotted gum timber, and natural stone with greenery cascading over the tiered structure.

“The clients approached us with a vision for Brahminy House centred around the idea of a modern coastal retreat that seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings while providing a luxurious and tranquil living experience,” says Tyler Gwyther of Harley Graham Architects.

Inside, the home is almost entirely clad in spotted gum, which is complemented by the deep smoked oak and rich brown tones of Tongue & Groove solid European oak boards in Sienna on the floors, walls, and ceiling.

“The Sienna finish of the Tongue & Groove boards complements the extensive use of spotted gum throughout the project,” says Tyler Gwyther, architect at Harley Graham Architects. “It brings a warmth to the spaces and elevates the other timber products.”

This contemporary natural palette not only evokes a refined beachside aesthetic and echoes the colours and textures of the surrounding landscape, but is also a durable solution for the often harsh coastal climate.

Crafted from three layers of European oak, Tongue & Groove boards have a reduced risk of warping and impressive structural stability that will stand the test of time.

“Working with the Tongue & Groove team was great,” says Gwyther. “They were helpful throughout the process, assisted with samples, and worked with the builder on site to help achieve our vision.”
